Weekly Musings III - Jump
Have you ever heard that saying, “Most people in startups build their parachute as they're falling”, well I think that’s applicable to most jumps in life.
6 months ago I made a relatively large jump. I packed up my entire life in Montreal into two suitcases and moved out to San Francisco with a pretty neat job offer in hand, and a head filled equally with doubts and hope. I’ve learned pretty quickly in life that there’s no roadmap for anything, whether we’re talking about life, success, career satisfaction, or even raising kids. There are half-baked guides, blog posts you can comb through, YouTube videos you can watch, but nothing can be replaced by raw experience.
There’s a lot I’ve learned about myself, what I want from life, and the woman I want to become during my time thus far in San Francisco. I’ve made a new community, found new thrift spots I like, and have my new go-to pad Thai place. Wide starry eyes have now transformed into welcomed routine, and new roots have slowly grown amidst adversity, fear, and anxiety.
This isn’t the blog post where I want to explore all the lessons learned, but I do want to say that no one is going to author your story. You have to have buy-in for your life, and you need to be willing to bet on yourself. No one is going to force you to move to that town you’ve dreamt of, or apply for that dream job. No one but yourself will make you jump.
